Indore: Congress held a protest in Indore on Wednesday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The protest was held amid the ongoing political controversy over the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. During the protest, a situation of pushing and shoving also arose between Congress workers and the police.

Congress workers marched on foot from the Harsiddhi area towards the Collector’s Office. Police stopped the protesters by putting up barricades before the Collectorate. After this, some workers tried to cross the barricades, during which an argument and pushing and shoving took place between the police and protesters. Police forces from several police stations were deployed at the spot.

March Stopped Before Reaching the Collectorate

After being stopped by the police, Congress workers sat on a dharna on the road itself and raised slogans. According to reports, an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was also burnt during the protest. Congress leaders reiterated their demand for his resignation and action against him.

Congress Allegations Over SIR

Congress says that questions related to transparency and voters’ rights are being raised over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The party is demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner over this issue. On the other hand, the Election Commission has said regarding decisions related to SIR that the relevant orders were issued with the approval of all three Election Commissioners.

Traffic was also affected during the protest and vehicles were diverted through alternative routes on some roads. The situation was kept under control in the presence of the police and administration.
