North Korea vs South Korea: The Nuclear War of Words between two nations.
North Korea’s state media KCNA harshly attacked President Lee Jae-Myung, branding him a “hypocrite seized with denuclearization paranoia.”
They mocked his U.S. speech on nuclear disarmament as a “naïve dream” and accused him of insulting North Korea by portraying it as a “poor but aggressive neighbour.”
Pyongyang insists that its nuclear arsenal is non-negotiable, calling it a necessary shield against U.S. and South Korean “hostility.”
During his recent trip to Washington, President Lee Jae-Myung:Reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).Called for stronger South Korea–U.S. cooperation.Stressed that the alliance should work toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea views these comments as a direct challenge to its identity as a “nuclear state” and sees them as an attempt to weaken its deterrence strategy.
Lee has been trying to restart dialogue with Pyongyang, offering small steps like:
But North Korea rejected these overtures, dismissing Lee’s words as “gibberish” and saying no talks will happen unless Seoul and Washington officially recognize its nuclear status.
United States: Welcomes Lee’s call for peace and denuclearization, but remains cautious since past talks collapsed.
China & Russia: Quietly support Pyongyang’s demand for recognition, using it as leverage against Washington.Japan: Supports Seoul’s diplomatic stance but pushes for stronger regional security cooperation in case of further North Korean provocations.
