In the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a subtle jab at Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi during a discussion on three new criminal law proposals. In response to the Congress MPs’ protest, he made a subtle allusion to Gandhi’s Italian heritage by stating that they possessed the “mind of Italy.”
During the Winter Session of Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is present at the Lok Sabha sessions. In the Lok Sabha, the three criminal statutes were approved by voice vote.
He claimed that people who are thinking about Italy won’t find the bills to be good. “I told those who claim we don’t understand that if you keep your mind open and keep it Indian, you will understand; if you keep it Italian, you won’t.” It’s not a language issue; it’s a mental one. If the intellect is Indian, you will comprehend right away; if not, you will never comprehend,” he said. The Parliament’s standing committee was tasked with reviewing the bills. The Congressmen had provided notes expressing disapproval.
The bills that were introduced were the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023, the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023. They took the place of the colonial laws that were first drafted during the British Raj.
“The administration of justice is the state’s primary duty. In order to provide justice, the drafters of the Constitution divided their task among the three pillars of democracy: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches,” Shah stated.
For the first time, a criminal justice system centred on justice rather than punishment will be established thanks to these three pillars. This is where laws are drafted, the executive will carry them out, and the judicial will finish up the job. Together, these three organs will create a judicial system, he declared.
Mob lynching has been added to the list of crimes in India under the legislation. The Indian Evidence Act of 1872, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and the Indian Penal Code of 1860 were superseded by these three acts. The Indian Evidence Act, CrPc, and IPC will be replaced by these bills. Over 97 opposition MPs were suspended by the Lok Sabha for their disruptive behaviour after they demanded a response from Shah over the security lapse that occurred in the Lok Sabha last week.
