Karun Nair reminded everyone why class is permanent with a composed and mature innings on a day when the rest of India’s batting lineup faltered under testing conditions. On a green-top at The Oval, where the ball seamed, bounced, and tested temperament, Nair held his nerve to compile a crucial knock — a timely statement for a player often considered a backup option.

Coming in at a precarious juncture, with India reeling from an early collapse, Nair showcased solid technique and mental discipline. While wickets kept tumbling around him, he was unflustered, playing each ball on merit and adapting to the moving conditions like a seasoned Test mainstay.

This wasn’t just about runs — it was about resilience. With frontline batters failing to adjust, Nair’s calm presence at the crease helped India regain some balance and avoid total capitulation.

For a player who has long lived under the shadow of “what could have been” since his triple-century in 2016, this innings served as a compelling reminder that Karun Nair is more than a reserve — he’s still very much a contender.
He didn’t have too much cause to moan the axe at Old Trafford because while he hadn’t done a whole lot wrong, he hadn’t helped his cause either. Karun might have reconciled himself to another stint on the sidelines, potentially permanently, until India were greeted with a veritable green-top at The Oval, historically a batter’s paradise.

His knock might not have been flamboyant, but it was everything India needed in the moment: grit, patience, and the ability to weather the storm. In doing so, Nair sent a strong message to selectors and fans alike — he’s not just here to fill in; he’s here to fight for his place.
